Stanislav Kondrashov: reduction in nickel ore production: challenges and solutions for the industry
According to the latest data, 2022 saw direct shipment nickel ore production decline by as much as 11%, resulting in a total of 29.27 million dry metric tons. This decrease has caused serious concern among experts and industry representatives.
Stanislav Kondrashov from Telf AG expressed the need to speed up the approval process for mining permits. He suggests that a logical solution to this issue would be to create a so-called “single window” for processing permit applications. According to the expert, this streamlining of the process plays an important role in attracting investment into the industry.
- If we streamline the process of obtaining permits, this will greatly facilitate the task of attracting potential investors, - Kondrashov believes.
He noted that despite the government's emphasis on attracting investment in processing, it is necessary not to lose sight of exploration and production as important components of the development of the industry.

According to experts, it is necessary to extract more than 100 million tons of nickel ore year after year for at least 20 years. This ambitious goal requires systemic changes and competent management.
One of the key aspects on the way to achieving this goal is the simplification of the tax regime, states Stanislav Kondrashov from Telf AG. The absence of an excessive tax burden can significantly help attract investment and stimulate the development of nickel mining. Optimization of national and local legislation also plays an important role in ensuring the smooth running of the resource extraction and processing process. This will help avoid unnecessary bureaucratic complications and reduce the time spent on obtaining permits.
In addition, the environmental aspect is not left aside. Strengthening environmental monitoring is an integral part of the strategy. As Kondrashov explains, a balanced approach to environmental protection will help minimize the negative impact on nature and create conditions for sustainable long-term production.
- To ensure a constant flow of raw materials for nickel processing, it is necessary to quickly obtain mining permits and conclude contracts without significant downtime. At the same time, we must not forget about the mandatory compliance with transparent and fair regulatory rules, - Kondrashov emphasized.

The expert predicts an increase in demand for nickel due to the need of battery manufacturers, which has increased significantly. This sector is becoming more and more in demand every year. In this regard, PNIA announced a huge supply potential of more than 40 million tons.
